Utah’s technology startups seem to be getting so much press lately, people tend to forget Utah is home to some pretty large manufacturing companies. Micron, Morton Thiokol and Icon Fitness quickly come to mind. Advances in technology make Utah a strong launching pad for manufacturing startups as well.
This was evidenced on Saturday afternoon at Crank SLC, the retail arm of Loki Cycles, a Salt Lake based fixed gear bicycle manufacturer. Started by Christian Clemens in 2011, the company has been expanding with a physical retail store and is now launching a one-of-a-kind bike pedal on kickstarter.
The product designer, Jason Klug, explained bike pedals are typically sold separately from the strap, so there tends to be problems with straps correctly fitting pedals. The “Lux Pedal” features a tapered strap for a better fit and easier adjustment. Durability was also a key feature in the design. The kickstarter launch price is $89.99 and goes on sale March 9th.
Besides being the launch pad for the Lux pedal, the party served to showcase a few other Utah manufacturing startups. Ogden Made sews custom bags and pouches. They had a successful kickstarter which launched their business and raised $17,000 on the crowdfunding platform. Crank SLC will soon carry their product.
During the launch presentation, Clemens explained manufacturing would be performed in Utah making the Lux Pedal a uniquely Utah product from inception and design to manufacturing and sales.
